When you read statistics and projections about the travel and tourism industry in South Africa, one cannot be anything but impressed.
For instance: tourism accounts for 10% of our total GDP and generate a staggering R17 500 million per annum in hotel room revenue alone.
We received a total of 10,6 million foreign visitors last year. And where does the majority come from – Europe? China? No. They are from Africa; and mostly the SADC (South African Development Community) countries. Our closest neighbours, in other words.
Another fascinating fact emerged around business travellers – including delegates to business symposiums and conferences: 40% of these delectably affluent people visit South Africa within five years as a tourist!
The best news, however, is that this pie will increase in 2021 to a total of 18,5 million visitors. Four star graded accommodation will account for 85% of all new rooms while five star graded establishments will boast an average occupancy of just below 80%.
But statistics are just boring facts without interpretation – and preferably by expert statisticians. Yet, it certainly is not rocket science to understand that tourism is the one success story in a country troubled by political and economic turbulence. (The projected growth for 2017 is 5,6%.)
Unfortunately, any industry showing such positive indicators will attract mediocre and downright illicit operators. The good news is that these imposters operate on thin ice and are soon weeded out by those that are truly dedicated to the highest standards. A fine challenge indeed!
The blue skies scenario for a tourist would be to receive the impeccable service and attention lavished at five-star establishments, but paying a lower premium for it.
Kind of like having your pie and eating it too!
